How to Safely Light Fireworks

Here are guidelines for learning how to safely light fireworks.

Stick to a few essential rules like never allowing children to play with fireworks. Read and follow all warnings and instructions and be sure other people are out of range before lighting fireworks. Strictly light fireworks only on smooth and flat surfaces that are away from all flammable material. Never ever relight fireworks that have not fully ignited.

Have a bucket of water close by in case of a malfunction or fire. Keep in mind that viewing should be limited to one side only for the fireworks display. It's not advisable to watch from all sides since it will be difficult to monitor everybody if they are all over the place. It's hard to keep an eye on all participants if the display is surrounded. Observe the following tips and guidelines when around fireworks:
  1. Place fireworks on hard flat surfaces with nothing flammable around. Avoid areas with dry leaves and foliage as they are especially dangerous; concrete or a well-watered, green lawn is best.
  2. Ensure that a hose equipped with a shut-off nozzle is ready at hand. Keep the hose running so that you only have to instantly douse any wayward fires by the press of the nozzle
  3. You need to prepare the flat surface for lighting fireworks on the lawn by placing a broad wooden plank on the grass. For added safety, soak the wood in water before using it to launch fireworks from.
  4. You need to organize the fireworks setting. It would be good to place fireworks at least six inches from each other on the wooden plank. Also, plan the order of your fireworks launch to ensure that you only light one firework at a time.
  5. Only one person should light the display. That person should not be drinking alcohol before or during the show and should preferably be an adult.
  6. If a firework doesn't light, or doesn't work after the fuse burns all the way down, it's called a dud. Wait at least 20 minutes after lighting the fuse and then place the dud into the bucket of water.
  7. Wait until each firework is finished before lighting the next.
  8. Sparklers should only be handled by kids older than 12.
  9. Make sure that people with lit sparklers stay at least 10 feet apart.
  10. Put all used sparklers in the water bucket.
  11. After all the fireworks have been lit and all used fireworks and duds have soaked for at least 10 minutes, discard the fireworks in an outside trashcan.

Remember to never smoke around fireworks or light fireworks on windy days. Wear cotton clothing to light fireworks. Synthetic fibers tend to melt onto skin, while cotton does not burn easily. Using long-tipped lighters is effective in safeguarding your body in case of accidents. Keep the viewing area at least 15 feet from the display.

For Immediate Release: New Future for Queen Mary’s Gets Final Approval

James Brokenshire has welcomed news that The Secretary of State for Health has given the final approval to transfer Queen Mary’s Hospital Sidcup to new, stable NHS ownership and to dissolve the failed South London Healthcare Trust (SLHT).  Queen Mary’s will be transferred to the Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust at midnight on Monday night (30 September) with hospital services being provided by a number of NHS organisations.

SLHT was put into administration in July 2012 after suffering crippling losses.  The trust which ran Queen Mary’s Sidcup, Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich and the Princess Royal University Hospital in Bromley had been suffering losses of £1 million a week and posted a deficit of £69.8 million in 2011/12 alone – the largest deficit of any NHS body in England.

From 1 October Queen Mary’s Hospital will be owned by Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust with services being provided to patients by Oxleas, Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust, King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Guy's and St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust, Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust and Bexley Council.

Oxleas have set out ambitious plans to invest up to £30 million over the next five years to improve facilities at the hospital.  Proposals would also see a new radiotherapy centre at the hospital allowing cancer patients to be treated locally in Sidcup rather than having to travel to Central London.

Continuing services will include:

  • 24-hour unscheduled care, including an urgent care centre and GP out-of-hours service
  • Older people's services
  • Children's services, including the children's development centre and paediatric walk-in unit
  • Specialist services, such as chemotherapy
  • Community midwifery services, linked to the hospitals where women from Bexley give birth
  • Outpatients services, such as general surgery, gynaecology and paediatrics
  • Day surgery
  • Diagnostics, including scans, ultrasound and x-ray
  • Therapies, including physiotherapy and occupational therapy
  • Inpatient mental health services for local patients
  • Community and inpatient neuro-rehabilitation services

James Brokenshire proposed the transfer of the hospital to Oxleas more than a year ago and has been pressing Ministers and NHS executives to see the change brought about.

Commenting, James said:

“This is an important day for the NHS in this area as it finally draws a line under a period of crippling instability and safeguards the future of Queen Mary’s Hospital.

“The transfer of Queen Mary’s into new NHS ownership provides the hospital with sound foundations to deliver much needed improvements to local healthcare.  This includes partnerships with other NHS organisations such as the central London teaching hospitals enabling them to apply their clinical expertise to services provided locally.

“Oxleas’ proposals for significant financial investment will improve facilities at the hospital.  The creation of a new radiotherapy unit at Queen Mary’s will also significantly enhance the treatment of cancer patients in this area.

“It is right that the mistake of the last Government in creating the South London Healthcare Trust saddled with onerous PFI contracts and burdened by a mountain of debt has been addressed.  It was clear pretty early on that SLHT was dysfunctional and unsustainable and firm action was needed to secure the future of our local hospitals.

“The changes at Queen Mary’s open a new chapter in its 96 year history and I believe will help deliver high quality hospital services for years to come.”
